englischKonrad Gaiser (1929-1988) is one of the most perceptive classical scholars of the second half of the twentieth century.
He published mainly on Plato and Menander, on Theophrastus, Thucydides and Philodemus. In the present volume, his most important articles (with the exception of those on Greek Comedy) are collected from a period of almost three decades.

In his Platonic studies, Gaiser shows, often in surprising and illuminating ways, the importance of mathematics and of Plato's oral theory of principles for our understanding of the dialogues. An astonishing variety of hermeneutical, philological and philosophical problems is being dealt with in clear argumentation and in a most readable style. From Gaiser's interpretations emerges an impressive and coherent picture of Plato as a poet and as an undogmatic metaphysical thinker.
