englischWith a focus on the political and religious surroundings in which Forty Hadith on Jihad emerge, the topic of the ‘exertion on the path of God’ will be for the first time systematically treated based on small hadith collections. A detailed analysis of four representative Forty Hadith collections on Jihad from the 12th,15th, 17th and 20th century illustrates the formulation of the thought and ideology of Jihad. Further, it shows different emphases on the importance and preconditions of conducting Jihad as well as its rewards or punishments in the different selected collections. The translation of all four of them (in German) makes the specific hadith material, which has been circulating from the time of the crusades to the present day, accessible to scientists and others with interest even beyond the field of Islamic studies.
