englischAlthough deviance as a historical phenomenon has been well researched, only few studies have focused on clerics who were unwilling or unable to adhere to the norms of priestly conduct. This volume presents selected cases from the 18th century to show how deviance arose, in which forms it appeared and how the authorities of the Bamberg diocese addressed it. The essays deal, inter alia, with the “clergy prison” in Schlüsselau and with priests who took part in magical treasure hunts, committed treason or had sexual relationships. Ten love letters of a chaplain were also edited. The volume thus emphasizes the complexity of clerical non-conformity.
