How responded the Austrian unions to these challenges, what were the causes of their decline at all; and which ability do they still have to stabilize the Austrian democracy and society?
The study comes to the conclusion that the change of the environment (economy, politics, society) was too hard, as that the OEGB had a chance to resist; and at the same time it caused its decline to a good part itself, its earlier strength led to weakness: A history of the OEGB from 1980-2010 with a view to its future.
Seit mehr als 30 Jahren befindet sich der ÖGB, einstmals eine der mächtigsten Gewerkschaften der Welt, in einer Krise. Mitgliedschaft, Finanzen und politischer Einfluss schwanden. Wie reagierten die Gewerkschaften als Großorganisationen auf diese Herausforderungen, was waren überhaupt die Ursachen ihres Niedergangs, und welche Integrationskraft für die österreichische Demokratie und Gesellschaft ist ihnen eigentlich noch zuzutrauen?
Die Studie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass der Wandel des Umfelds (Wirtschaft, Politik, Gesellschaft) viel zu stark war, als dass sich der ÖGB ohne Substanzverlust hätte behaupten können; zugleich verschuldete er seinen Niedergang zu einem gehörigen Teil selbst, bedingte seine frühere Stärke die spätere Schwäche: Eine Geschichte des ÖGB von 1980-2010 mit einem Ausblick auf seine Zukunft.
