englischIn his famous painting entitled “Le Congrès de Vienne”, Napoleon’s court painter, Jean-Baptist Isabey (1767–1855), depicts twenty-three members of the coalition against Napoleon at the Congress of Vienna, which was held from 1814–1815.

This collection of studies is based on the idea of its publisher, Winfried Böttcher, to portray the ambassadors responsible for reorganising Europe’s borders at the Congress of Vienna in their family, contemporary, political and occupational environments. Their personalities reflect their national interests and the compromises agreed on at the Congress.

This book’s depiction of the most important figures at the Congress is completed by studies of the sovereigns represented there and Napoleon, who were the principal decision makers and the cause and effect of Europe’s restructuring, respectively.

Like in a jigsaw puzzle, twelve eminent historians and political scientists piece together the convergence of interests and interaction at this remarkable conference in a fascinating and informative manner.
