englischHow was peace in pre-modern times conceived, designed, and how were peace treaties interpreted? In the present anthology of essays by Martin Espenhorst peace discourses of the 18th century are presented, in which the value of peace was estimated, proposals for preserving peace were submitted, but its practical implementation also was doubted. While, in 1500-1800 practice instruments of peace were increasingly been invented and developed, simultaneously philosophical, historical, political and theological peace texts were created that provide a deep insight into the pre-modern handling of peace.

Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of misunderstanding in pre-modern peace treaty theory. In this case, important scholars were analyzed such as Rousseau, Moser, Schlözer, Gundling and Justi.
