englischMonitoring publicly accessible areas with modern video surveillance systems has steadily increased in recent years. Video surveillance for example is used to monitor public roads, squares, assemblies, public transports, hospitals and care facilities. This fundamental situation is currently experiencing a new dynamic as a result of the advancing technical development which is characterized by the use of intelligent video surveillance systems. It is characteristic for such systems to have microprocessors independently evaluating data and performing error corrections or similar tasks. Video surveillance gets its “intelligence” from the fact that the system evaluates images by itself and thus replaces the intelligence of a human being who would typically be observing the area. The questions of data protection law, which are in principle connected with this, will be discussed in detail whereby technical protection measures for the protection of privacy are always taken into account.
