However, Beijing has been forced to show restraint because of global interdependence, China’s dependence on maritime trade routes and strategic culture. Until now, Washington has erred on the side of caution, focusing its East Asia policy on integration and staving off conflict, but the rivalry between the United States and China has the potential to escalate. This book gives a realistic assessment of a topic which is widely neglected in Germany but highly relevant for international relations.
