englischThe essays in this volume deal with plants and food as highly artificial yet living things. On the basis of the techno-philosophical concept of ‘biofacts’ (Nicole C. Karafyllis), the authors analyse contemporary developments in agriculture and the food sector. Biofacts–as demonstrated–undermine the traditional distinction between dead technology and living nature and, hence, the practical assignments and moral expectations that are tied to them. The ambiguity of crops and food items is the topic of this volume with contributions from the fields of history, sociology, philosophy and design theory. The book’s geographical scope encompasses Africa and Europe, while its historical scope ranges from the beginning of the 20th century to the present and the future.

Dieser Band thematisiert Pflanzen und Lebensmittel als hochgradig artifizielle, aber dennoch lebendige Dinge und Wesen. Ausgehend vom technikphilosophischen Konzept der "Biofakte" (Nicole C. Karafyllis), analysieren die Autor/innen aktuelle und zeitgeschichtliche Entwicklungen in Landwirtschaft und Ernährung. Biofakte, so wird gezeigt, unterlaufen die traditionelle Unterscheidung von unbelebter Technik und lebender Natur und damit auch die praktischen Zuschreibungen und moralischen Erwartungen, die damit verbunden sind. Diese Mehrdeutigkeit von Kulturpflanzen und Lebensmitteln wird im vorliegenden Band aus der Perspektive der Geschichtswissenschaften, Soziologie, Philosophie und Designtheorie beleuchtet. Der geografische Radius umspannt Afrika und Europa; der historische das beginnende 20. Jahrhundert, die Gegenwart und ihre Zukunftsvisionen.
