englischThe financial state of public households, the demographic change, new information and communication technologies as well as new global challenges require public administration, which acts in a strong and efficient way.

The measures to be taken in order to adjust the administration to these developments are not only influenced by Community Law (Lisbon Strategy), but also by tendencies present in individual states. Examples are decentralization, new public management, governance, reform of public finance as well as e-government. The book presents and compares current strategies of several countries, taking into consideration the individual traditions of administration and national administrative systems.

The volume documents the presentations of the „First European Summit on Modernizing Government“ (Aug. 23-25, 2006, German University of Administrative Sciences, Speyer). Experts from 20 European countries gave a lecture on trends in their native countries as well as on modernization-topics relevant throughout Europe.
