englischPunishment, as a deliberately inflicted evil, is in great need of moral justification, and should we fail to justify it, this realisation should shake us and we should urgently look for alternatives so that we do not continue to spread evil in the world instead of preventing it.

This book aims to show in detail that punishment is just such an unjustified evil through a moral-philosophical examination of theories of punishment from antiquity to the present day. In doing so, it makes the most convincing and well-known theories as strong as possible in order to then examine them critically in terms of their moral persuasiveness. And since they all fail, the author subsequently considers alternatives to punishment.
