This book aims to show in detail that punishment is just such an unjustified evil through a moral-philosophical examination of theories of punishment from antiquity to the present day. In doing so, it makes the most convincing and well-known theories as strong as possible in order to then examine them critically in terms of their moral persuasiveness. And since they all fail, the author subsequently considers alternatives to punishment.
Strafe ist als ein bewusst zugefügtes Übel im höchsten Maße moralisch rechtfertigungsbedürftig und sollte eine Rechtfertigung nicht gelingen, so müsste uns diese Erkenntnis erschüttern und wir müssten uns dringend um Alternativen kümmern, um nicht weiterhin Übel in der Welt zu verbreiten, statt sie zu verhindern.
Dass Strafe genau so ein ungerechtfertigtes Übel ist, will dieses Buch ausführlich in einer moralphilosophischen Auseinandersetzung mit den Straftheorien von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart zeigen. Dabei werden die überzeugendsten und bekanntesten Theorien möglichst stark gemacht, um sie daraufhin auf ihre moralische Überzeugungskraft kritisch zu überprüfen. Und da sie alle scheitern, werden schließlich Alternativen angedacht.
