englischIn March 2010, depsite massive political and public resistance, President Barack Obama turned a comprehensive health reform into law: the ‘Affordable Care Act’, better known as ‘Obamacare’.

This dissertation deals with the Affordable Care Act and its consequences for the US healthcare system. In addition to describing the complex healthcare system in the United States and the changes brought about to it by the healthcare reform, it focuses on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, which was primarily delegated to the individual states. By taking into consideration the judgement of the US Supreme Court regarding the constitutionality of the healthcare reform (NFIB v Sebelius), the author analyses to what extent the states have shaped the underlying policy design of the Affordable Care Act and shows the importance of state implementation of federal law in a multilevel system such as the United States.
