englischRepublicanism, theocracy and military dictatorship are frequently associated with Oliver Cromwell's rule during the interregnum following the English Revolution (1642–1660). Yet it is precisely the diversity of the understandings of state and rule communicated in the disputes of this phase for or against Cromwell that offered diverse points of departure for later debates on the state, rule and participation. This volume therefore does not consider Cromwell alone, but understands the concepts devised in the aforementioned revolutionary period as part of a debate that must be analysed against the background of changing receptions. Thus, Cromwell's views are contextualised.
