englischMusic appropriation in digital media culture is currently characterised by social media short videos, especially TikToks and Instagram Reels. This study explores the transformative influences of short videos on the musical message, based on the concept of digital mediamorphosis. The focus is on the appropriation of popular music in music-centric short videos and their impact on the contextualisation of the musical message. The video analysis presents findings on the intermedial interplay of image, text and sound. User-centred interviews reveal how users appropriate popular music through short videos. Three modes of appropriation of reception and two of production are outlined.
