From a (meta-)theoretical perspective, the book challenges two central tendencies in M&A research. Firstly, it counteracts the increasing fragmentation and isolation of approaches by taking the concept of integration back to its roots in organisation theory. Secondly, using a materialist–realist explanation, it critically examines the dominating idealist–subjectivist approach to theorising (e.g. organisational culture).
Since the study empirically quantifies and visualises power potential on the levels of teaching and research units, the author suggests ways of applying his findings to numerous organisational steering issues beyond the study’s primary subject of interest.
Wodurch werden Tiefe und Richtung der nach Fusionen realisierten organisationalen Integration bestimmt? Anhand von Hochschulzusammenschlüssen und geleitet durch die Resource-Dependence-Theorie zeigt der Verfasser empirisch, dass aus Umweltabhängigkeiten folgende interne Machtrelationen entscheiden.
In (meta-)theoretischer Hinsicht wendet sich der Text gegen zwei Grundtendenzen innerhalb der Fusionsforschung. Zum einen wird der wachsenden Fragmentierung von Ansätzen mit einer Anbindung des Integrationskonzepts an seine organisationstheoretischen Wurzeln begegnet. Zum anderen werden die dominierenden idealistisch-subjektivistischen Ansätze (z. B. Organisationskultur) auf Basis einer materialistisch-realistischen Erklärung kritisch hinterfragt.
Da die empirischen Analysen Machtpotenziale auf der Ebene von Lehr- und Forschungseinheiten quantifizieren und visualisieren, ergeben sich Anwendungsbezüge für eine Vielzahl von über den engeren Erklärungsgegenstand hinausgehenden Steuerungsfragen.
