englischThis is a meticulous sociopolitical analysis of the problems of social inequality and poverty in Latin America (especially in the most advanced countries) by a former senior research associate of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik). The investigation is characterised by a comparative perspective which, among other things, enables the reader to make comparisons with Germany and the USA. This study particularly focuses on the political capabilities of the lower classes to obtain more social justice and critically discusses current theories on the development of middle-class societies in Latin America.
Spezifikum des Buches ist die sorgfältige sozio-politische Untersuchung der Probleme sozialer Ungleichheit und Armut in Lateinamerika (insbesondere der am höchsten entwickelten Länder) in dezidiert komparativer Perspektive. So werden u.a. systematisch Daten und Informationen präsentiert, die Vergleiche mit Deutschland sowie den USA ermöglichen. Besonderes Interesse gilt der Analyse der komplexen lateinamerikanischen Unterschichtenwirklichkeit im Hinblick auf die Frage, inwieweit mehr Chancengleichheit durchgesetzt werden könnte. Gängige Thesen über die Entstehung von Mittelschichtgesellschaften in Lateinamerika werden kritisch diskutiert.
