englischDigital forms and formations of communication are posing new challenges to the culture of social debate. The demands for truth, correctness and veracity in democratic discourse expressed by Jürgen Habermas seem to have lost relevance in the public sphere. Against this background, this volume examines the topic ‘cultures of dispute’ with a view to the history, present and future of public and democratic discourse: How were disputes conducted? How are disputes conducted? How could and should disputes be conducted? In an interdisciplinary discussion, the volume examines the conditions and ways in which, under shifting media conditions, understanding-oriented, tolerant and democratic communication can be shaped from a communication and media ethics perspective in order to constructively manage conflicts.
