englischFirst-year students are confronted with various challenges. Terminating their studies can be the consequence if it is not possible for them to cope with them. German universities are increasingly focusing on this issue by employing appropriate measures to reduce the number dropouts or to assist in their transition to another degree programme or to vocational training. Based on research literature, this survey points out strategic approaches which are considered to be relevant for universities. Moreover, it assesses existing initiatives in order to identify examples of "good practice". As a result, the survey provides some starting points which are relevant to the process of strategic university planning and organisation.
