englischIn many cases, a cultural synchronization of the socialist states oriented by the Soviet Union is stated. What remains unnoticed is that their ties to Moscow were differentiated. The reason for this is not only a different restrictive cultural policy, but also an unequally strong will to commit to Marxism in the individual countries. The aim of this study is to investigate the reasons for this phenomenon and its effects on literature and literary studies during the years 1949 to 1990, using China, the GDR, Poland, and Vietnam as examples.

In addition to documents and correspondence, interviews with contemporary witnesses serve as a basis for investigation. Christa and Gerhard Wolf, Utz Rachowski, Ba Jin, Zhang Jie, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and many others have their say.
