englischKepler (Weil der Stadt 1571-1630 Regensburg) is well known as an astronomer, mathematician and optician. He is less familiar as a poet. But the 24-year-old’s very first astronomical work, Mysterium Cosmographicum begins with two short poems and ends with a hymn in 32 hexameter lines to God as creator of the world. Kepler continues to write poems almost until his death. Kepler’s poems are almost without exception written in Latin. In this edition each Latin poem has a parallel German translation in the same metre. A detailed commentary offers interpretations of the poems, provides information on the historical background, explains difficult passages and gives brief biographical information about the people mentioned.
