englisch“Joseph Joachim – Identities | Identitäten” presents new perspectives on the Hungarian violinist, composer, and pedagogue Joseph Joachim (1831–1907). Encompassing eighteen essays about Identity and Self-Staging, Identities on the European Musical Stage, Joseph Joachim in England, and Identity and (Inter)national Networks, the book brings together leading nineteenth-century scholars to examine not only Joachim’s position within the diverse spheres in which he operated, but also offers fresh analytical perspectives on his performative and compositional work. Furthermore, this volume sheds new light on Joachim’s pedagogical activities, thanks to recently unearthed archival sources accessed here for the first time.

By blurring the lines between Joachim’s separate identities as composer, violinist, and pedagogue, this book proposes fresh approaches to discussing performer-composers more generally, and their unique multi-disciplinary ways of knowledge production.
