englischTiziano Vecellio from Pieve di Cadore (1488/90-1576) is considered one of the most important Venetian Renaissance painters. In this book, the author analyzes selected works by the artist under the aspects of materiality and volatilization with a special focus on the application of paint and the painterly process. Based on Titian's handling of light and color, explanatory approaches for a diaphanous pictorial effect are presented here.

The description of light in Dante Alighieri's Commedia (completed in 1321), a much-received work in the Renaissance, is used here as a reading aid for a better understanding of Titian's paintings: both the poet and the painter modeled their figures in light.
