englischCrisis experiences with one's own currency leave their mark: banking, financial, economic and currency crises shape political and economic systems, the handling of money at the level of society as a whole as well as at the private level, the structure and organisation of institutions and, last but not least, national identities, political cultures and systems. As self-evident as this may sound, it is worthwhile to question and examine the influence of national economic cultures, as an important part of national identities, on the "construct of Europe": Not only in the initial phases of the founding of the European Communities did the different experiences and attitudes clash controversially - even today the euro as a common currency is repeatedly in crisis mode in the "clash of economic cultures". This volume aims to further trace these historical and political contexts and brings together lectures and transcripts of conversations with actors in monetary, financial and currency policy, experts in fiscal and economic policy and analysts of economic and currency crises who were invited to the Hildesheim "Europagespräche" between 2014 and 2018. In view of the manifold crises of the last decade, the lectures and interviews with Lars P. Feld, Werner Hoyer, Sebastian Huhnholz, Otmar Issing, Max Otte, Athanassios Pitsoulis, Hans Reckers and Klaus Regling have themselves become a document of contemporary history.
